Destination Illustration & Place Branding
Illustrated Maps, Architectural Artwork & Place-Based Storytelling for Hospitality, Tourism & Retail Brands
Custom illustrations that capture the character of a destination through architecture, maps, landmarks, and place-based storytelling for hospitality, tourism, retail, and lifestyle brands.
Every destination has its own personality.
Sometimes it's found in the architecture that defines a street. Sometimes it's tucked inside a favourite café, a historic storefront, a local winery, or a quiet beach that visitors stumble upon by chance. They're often the little details people remember long after they've returned home.
Through custom illustration, I transform those places into artwork that tells a story. Whether created for hospitality, tourism, retail, or visitor experiences, every illustration is designed to celebrate what makes a destination unique while creating artwork that can be shared across maps, marketing materials, stationery, signage, merchandise, and digital platforms.
Every Destination Begins With Discovery
Every destination begins with discovery, not illustration. Before I sketch a building or paint a landmark, I map the experience itself, studying roadways, neighbourhoods, landmarks, and the places that define how visitors move through a destination.
Whether I'm creating an illustrated shopping guide for a boutique retailer, place-based artwork for a hospitality brand, or a custom destination map, I begin by understanding how people actually experience that location.
I study streets and walking routes. I learn the architecture. I explore local businesses, parks, beaches, restaurants, wineries, neighbourhoods, and landmarks. I look for the details that give each destination its own personality.
The research isn't simply preparation. It's part of the illustration itself.
By the time I begin drawing, the destination already feels familiar.
"One of my favourite parts of creating destination illustrations is learning places I've never been. By the time the artwork is finished, I almost feel like I've already visited."
From Research to Illustration
Every illustration begins as a collection of observations.
Reference photography, maps, architectural details, colour palettes, local landmarks, and countless small details gradually come together before the first sketch ever takes shape.
Rather than simply recreating a photograph, I simplify and interpret each destination, highlighting the elements that make it instantly recognizable while preserving the warmth and personality that make illustration so memorable.
The result is artwork that feels both familiar and timeless, balancing accuracy with storytelling in a way photography alone often cannot.

Wendy Foster Companies
Building a Destination Through Illustration
When the Wendy Foster Companies approached me, they weren't looking for a traditional map.
They wanted an elegant piece of branded artwork that celebrated the Santa Barbara lifestyle while helping customers discover their collection of retail stores, restaurants, wineries, and local destinations.
Rather than simply showing locations, the goal was to create an illustration that encouraged exploration while reinforcing the connection between the Wendy Foster and Pierre Lafond brands.
The result became far more than a visitor map.
It became a long-term marketing asset that continued to evolve as the business grew.
Understanding the Destination
Every destination illustration begins with research.
Before sketching a single building, I studied the businesses, surrounding communities, local landmarks, roadways, beaches, wineries, mountains, hotels, and points of interest that make Santa Barbara unique.
The challenge wasn't simply drawing beautiful illustrations.
It was understanding how visitors actually experience the region so the final artwork would feel intuitive, informative, and unmistakably local.
The original creative brief outlined everything from featured businesses and landmarks to the desired brand personality, colour palette, future marketing uses, and long-term flexibility.
Bringing the Region to Life
With the research complete, I began translating Santa Barbara into illustration.
Rather than relying on standard map icons, each landmark was individually illustrated to create a softer, more editorial feel.
Historic architecture.
Palm-lined streets.
Local wineries.
The Pacific coastline.
Mountain backdrops.
Botanical details.
Together they transformed a functional map into something guests would actually enjoy exploring.
Designed to Grow
One of my favourite aspects of this project is that it didn't end after delivery.
As Wendy Foster expanded and locations evolved, I was invited back to update the map so it continued reflecting the business accurately.
Rather than becoming outdated, the illustration continued evolving alongside the brand, remaining a valuable marketing asset as the business grew.
That's exactly what thoughtful destination illustration should do.
It grows with the places it represents.
Every Place Has a Story
This project was created for Wendy Foster Companies, but the same destination illustration process applies to hospitality brands, wineries, shopping districts, tourism organizations, historic destinations, and visitor experiences around the world.
Every project begins with research, local storytelling, and thoughtful illustration designed to help people remember not just where they've been, but how that place made them feel.
Hospitality & Commercial Applications
One of my favourite examples of this versatility was creating a custom architectural illustration for the opening dinner of the Hilton Garden Inn Haymarket in Virginia.
The illustrated hotel became the focal point of an elegant commemorative menu celebrating the property's grand opening, demonstrating how destination illustration can elevate hospitality experiences while reinforcing a brand's identity.
Projects like this show how illustration can move seamlessly between private celebrations and commercial environments, creating meaningful artwork that guests genuinely want to keep.

Do you work from photographs?
Yes. Most projects begin with photographs, architectural references, maps, and research. These references help ensure every illustration feels authentic while allowing room for artistic interpretation.
Can illustrations be used across multiple marketing materials?
Yes. Many clients use the same illustration across websites, brochures, stationery, signage, merchandise, social media, and advertising, creating a consistent visual identity across every customer touchpoint.
Can you illustrate an entire neighbourhood or destination?
Absolutely. I regularly create collections featuring multiple buildings, landmarks, restaurants, parks, beaches, and other points of interest to tell the story of an entire destination.
Do you only create illustrations for weddings?
Not at all. While weddings introduced many clients to my illustration style, I also work with hospitality, tourism, retail, and lifestyle brands looking to create memorable destination-focused artwork.
Can the illustrations become part of our brand identity?
Yes. Many businesses commission destination illustrations as long-term brand assets that can be incorporated into future marketing materials, printed collateral, merchandise, and promotional campaigns.
